Taking their creative craft more seriously, Shady Grove Lampshades inquired about setting up a logotype for their new business in the Fall of 2006. We explored many typefaces and found Matrix Small Caps Bold with the unusual triangular serifs expressed their unique character while looking somewhat antique too. Fine letterspacing adjustments and visual alignments resulted in a highly legible logotype with an intriguing sense of balance and assymetry.
Their business card design was more straightforward of a process. They knew they wanted a topiary illustration and thinly ruled boundary lines. The topiary tree is balanced, yet textural and looks a lot like a festive gift. The typography mimics the centered vertical balance of the topiary tree while the logo maintains the primary graphic hierarchy on the card. The vertical emphasis of Times functions beautifully with the logo and furthers the subtly antique feel in combination with an off-white colored card stock. To finish it off, the card was printed with a black heat-raised ink for a special 3-dimensional glossy look.
